Doha: Qatar has been ranked the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), reaffirming its position as one of the region's safest and most stable nations despite growing geopolitical challenges.

The achievement was announced by the National Planning Council (NPC), which said the latest ranking reflects the country's continued progress in strengthening public safety, institutional effectiveness and social cohesion. Qatar has maintained its leading position in the MENA region while improving key peace indicators measured by the internationally recognised index.

According to the report, Qatar recorded an improvement in the Societal Safety and Security category, with its score improving from 1.400 in 2025 to 1.369 in 2026. The NPC said the improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of the country's institutions, governance and national capabilities in maintaining security and stability.

The Global Peace Index, published annually by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 countries and territories using indicators covering levels of societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.

The NPC noted that Qatar's consistent performance reflects its long-term commitment to sustainable development, effective governance and a secure environment for citizens, residents and businesses. The ranking also reinforces the country's reputation as a preferred destination for investment, tourism and international events.

Officials said the latest result aligns with Qatar's broader national development goals of enhancing quality of life, promoting social stability and building resilient institutions capable of supporting long-term economic and social progress.
